Below are some answers to the most frequently asked questions we’re asked at Don-Tre Driving School

Are six hours of driving instruction enough for my child?

That’s a GREAT QUESTION!  The state of NJ has mandated that a 6 hour behind the wheel training program is the MINIMUM to be eligible to receive a learners permit for any person that is at least 16 years of age, and less than 17 years of age.

The 6 hour behind the wheel training provides a foundation for students to prepare them to begin supervised practice driving with their parent or guardian. For many students, this is simply not enough time.

Don-Tre Driving School views our relationship with you as a partnership, and we are always available to answer your questions, and provide some telephone support to help you along the journey of teaching your teenager how to safely operate their vehicle.

If they complete the 6 hours and we feel that they are not ready for you, we will discuss this with you, and you can determine if you would like to purchase some additional training. Some parents will work with their teen for a few months, and then schedule a few hours of additional time with us to work on some difficult areas, teach them to drive in alternate types of traffic or weather conditions, etc.

If you are interested in discussing these additional services, please feel free to contact us at 973-376-8118 or email us at info@dontredriving.com.

Of course!  Don-Tre Driving School enjoys seeing our clients through the entire process. Not only are we happy to schedule the time to take your student driver to the road test, and use our vehicle for the test, but many of our clients request a refresher lesson as part of this service. Can I use MY car for a road test?

Yes you can, with some stipulation. It is not required that a driving school take your child to the road test; however, you MUST have an emergency brake in the middle of the front seats IF your vehicle has a full center console.  If the center console denies access to the brake pedal for an emergency stop by the inspector, you are not allowed to use that vehicle.

Do I still need to take the NJ permit test if I am older than age 16?

Yes. Any new driver younger than 21 years old is required to complete the full New Jersey MVC graduated driver licensing (GDL) program. There are also restrictions for drivers over the age of 21. For more information, you can click here, or feel free to call our office (973) 376-8118 to discuss your situation, and we will be happy to assist you.

How long is the wait for our child to get on the road and start their training with Don-Tre Driving School?

While we generally have an active list of students taking our courses, we are usually able to begin the first lesson within 2 weeks of having the permit issued.  We suggest that you schedule in advance, and ensure that you have all of your paperwork completed timely, so that we can begin your 6 hour behind the wheel driver training as soon as possible.

My child has not taken the high school driver education class and has not taken the written knowledge test. What do we do?

Every new driver must pass the written knowledge test (NJ Permit Test), but there is NO requirement for the high school course in order to get a learners permit. Don-Tre Driving School does teach a 30-Hour Driver Theory course that you can enroll in if you would like.  Please contact us to enroll or for more information about this course at (973) 376-8118 or via email at info@dontredriving.com.

Do your cars have dual controls?

Yes. All of the Don-Tre Driving School vehicles have a dual brake system, allowing the instructor to stop the car if (or when) necessary.  This is required by the state of NJ.

Can I take my 16 yr. old to MVC and get the permit myself?

No. The driving school must do all that for you. In fact, if the student driver loses their permit, you must contact the driving school to get a replacement for him or her.

We have a 16 yr. old, why must I go through a driving school?

The driving age in NJ is 17. The state of NJ has an “early bird route” that allows a student driver, at the age of 16, to drive with supervision only after they receive a minimum of 6 hours of behind the wheel driving instruction with a NJ state-certified driving school.

Testimonials

At Don-Tre Driving School, we take pride in the success of our students. We do our best to provide quality driver education and keep the entire process as simple and pleasant as we can. We’ve had so many successful and happy students and we are blessed to be teaching the children of many of the parents we taught years ago!

Here’s what some of our customers have to say:

  • My son was completely nervous about learning to drive.  In fact, we practically had to force him.  Peter took Tom out, and the situation completely turned around.  Not only was Peter professional, but he helped Tom gain a level of confidence both behind the wheel and in life.  Thanks Don-Tre!

  • What a cool instructor!  I had John as my instructor. I was a little bit nervous, but he was very calming, and by the end of the 6th hour, I really felt like I understood what I was doing.  I came back to Don-Tre to take my test and I passed!  Yay!

  • I cannot recommend Don-Tre Driving School enough.  It’s funny, but I actually learned to drive with Don-Tre is 1989, and now my son and my daughter both learned to drive with Don-Tre too!  Don Carpenter is the most amazing teacher I have ever known!
